FAQ: Turfing Services in South London

When is the best time to lay turf?

You can lay turf any time of year as long as the ground isn’t frozen, waterlogged, muddy, or very dry, making it ideal for turfing in South London where weather conditions can vary.

After laying the turf, water it late in the evening with a sprinkler so the water has time to absorb into the soil before the sun comes out and evaporates the water off of it.
We suggest that you keep watering it daily (unless it rains) for between 30-60 minutes for the first 3 weeks

You should wait at least three weeks before walking on the turf to avoid damaging the roots or creating footprints in the soil.
Once the roots have established, this will bind the soil together, making it firm enough to walk on without effecting the levels.

You should wait at least three weeks before mowing the turf. When you first mow it, don’t cut it too short, aim for 4–4.5 cm and gradually cut it shorter over time to your desired length.
we recommend regular cutting to a height of around 2.5cm

It typically takes 3–6 weeks for the turf to fully root, but it can vary depending on the time of year and aftercare.

Lawns are usually fertilised twice a year. Once in the spring and once in the Autumn.
All our turf products are installed pre fertilised, so you normally won’t have to feed your new lawn for around 6 months.

We provide turfing services across South London, including Bromley, Croydon, Clapham, Wimbledon, Blackheath, and beyond. If you’re unsure whether we cover your area, feel free to contact us.

Common Concerns: Turfing in South London

1. DISEASE

One of the challenges of turfing in South London is managing lawn diseases such as Fusarium Patch Disease, the most common issue affecting grass. A suitable fungicide treatment may need to be applied two or three times to cure this. This disease is often caused by insufficient maintenance, such as over-fertilising or inadequate watering.

2. WEEDS

Weeds can be a persistent issue for those investing in turfing in South London. However, a well-maintained lawn can prevent weeds from taking root, as they struggle to survive in healthy turf. Regular weed treatments, which are widely available, can eliminate weeds without harming the grass.

3. TOADSTOOLS

Usually when the soil is prepared for the new turf, buried organic matter is brought to the surface.
The fungi spores are triggered when conditions are suitable (mild and wet), causing an outbreak of toadstools.
When the supply of nutrients in the ground are finished the toadstools will die, no more are produced so they do not re-appear.
They do not damage the lawn and by breaking down dead matter they are beneficial.
You can also remove them with a stiff broom or mower.

4. TOUGH STALKS

In many cases of turfing in South London, homeowners encounter tough Ryegrass stalks that remain upright after mowing. These can be managed by maintaining the lawn height between 12-25mm and ensuring good nutrient levels.

5. LUMPS OF MUD IN LAWN

These are caused by worm casts which are common from September to October and March to early May.
They become flattened and smeared by foot traffic or mowing and are a nuisance.
They can create weeds or bald patches.
It is best to brush off the casts with a stiff broom.
